'I was furious': Girlfriend catches her boyfriend's sister mistreating her cat and kicks her out, the boyfriend takes his sister's side, saying that his girlfriend is "overreacting" and being too protective of her cat

Maybe we're asking for too much, we don't know, but we think that looking for a partner who will actually like our cat is not that big of a request. Some people don't like cats, fine. We can't relate whatsoever, but fine. Those are not the ones we would be looking for. We want the people who like cats, but considering how many stories we come across of cats causing rifts in relationships, maybe we're wrong?

Really, we have seen everything. Boyfriends breaking up with their girlfriends because of cats… and their fragile egos. Girlfriends thinking that their boyfriends are too affectionate with their cats because they do… perfectly normal things with it. Boyfriends calling their girlfriends unhygienic because they… kiss their cats on their foreheads. Madness. And today is another weird story. The girlfriend caught her boyfriend's sister mistreating her cat, lifting it by the tail, and instead of telling his sister to stop and that it was a wrong thing to do, the boyfriend stood by the sister - took her side.

    So, here's the situation. I (26F) live with my boyfriend (28M) and we have a cat that I absolutely adore. He's my baby, and I treat him like family. My boyfriend's sister (30F) came over to visit last night, and things got a little tense.

    I was in the other room when I heard a loud noise, followed by my cat screeching. I rushed in to find my boyfriend's sister holding my cat by his tail, and my cat was clearly in pain. I immediately told her to let him go and checked on him. Fortunately, he wasn't seriously injured, but he was shaken up.

I understand that cats can scratch, but that doesn't give anyone the right to hurt them back. I told her that she needed to leave immediately because that behavior was completely unacceptable. My boyfriend tried to defend her, saying it was an accident and that I was overreacting.

  • First of all, no, you were not wrong for telling them off. Maybe kicking them out was a step too far, but considering the fact that this has happened multiple times, we cannot blame you. We would have been mad too. About breaking up with him… we're not sure. This could be a major red flag. We would have a conversation.

    Fluffy_Sheepy NTA. What accident? An accident is when you're walking and step on a tail because you didn't see that the cat was sitting in a bad spot, yanking a tail is not an accident. She's 30 years old, not 3, she should know better.

    And if this isn't the first time she's hurt the cat, she's already a repeat offender and shouldn't be allowed anywhere near your cat. And the boyfriend keeps defending her, so he shouldn't either. Dump the both of them.

    WaryScientist NTA - a cat is an animal and scratches when they feel threatened. A 30 year old woman should be able to control her emotions and NOT ab se a small animal. She could have broken your cat's tail. I'd be calling the cops and reporting her for animal ab se just kicking her out was a kindness. Your boyfriend is a POS for defending animal ab se.

  • The most important thing, at the end of the day, is not keeping your boyfriend away from your cat (although maybe that should be done too, depending on how that conversation will go), but keeping the sister away. As long as he understands that, then maybe this relationship still has a future.

    kraft_dinnerr That's psychotic. Wow I would have slapped her. Holding a cat by the tail that's insane. If she doesn't like cats she could just ignore it when she's over but she's deliberately gone out of her way to hurt it. I wouldn't want her anywhere near my house.

    chez2202 NTA. The average house cat weighs around 4kg. She's a fully grown human being and probably weighs 15x or more what your cat weighs. Holding him by his tail IS NOT an accident. It's like you or I having our leg pulled by a horse. These people should not be allowed near animals.

    FryOneFatManic The cat was scratching to defend himself, especially as you say she's done stuff before. I'd rethink the bf as well. He clearly doesn't care about the cat, given how he defends his sister.
